Ivory Statue

Image courtesy of Carol Horner (IRM, Dalhousie University) and Mary Anne White (Chemistry, Dalhousie University)

This statue is carved from an elephant ivory tusk, and has been kindly loaned to us by Environment Canada. The base shows the full size of the tusk. We used this ivory sample, taking a slice off the bottom of the tusk, to study the thermal and mechanical properties of ivory. For details, see: “Elephant Ivory: A Low Thermal Conductivity, High Strength Nanocomposite”. M B. Jakubinek, C. Samarasekera and M. A. White, Journal of Materials Research 21, 287-292 (2006).
